Jones the Grocer

Overview

Tucked away behind Viaduct bar Bungalow 8, Jones the Grocer is one of the many cafes that opened around the time of last year's Rugby World Cup. I decided to pop by for lunch and check out what the excitement of this Australian-origin hotspot was all about.

The first thing I noticed was the menu: the paper menu found on each table was a little limited for my liking, with mainly breakfast-type items available (even though it was obviously lunchtime). Egg haters would be displeased at the sheer extent of eggy-ness on this menu. However, if you meander inside to the counter, you'll find a more substantial (and very healthy) offering of salads, wraps, and generously-sized sandwiches.

Deciding to bypass the cabinet offerings, I ordered the grilled chicken (found on the paper menu), which came with ciabatta, lettuce, tomato, bacon, and brie cheese. Unfortunately, there was far more ciabatta than anything else, and although the chicken was quite tasty, I would have enjoyed slightly more of it in the dish!

More like a deli than a cafe, Jones seems to be a popular choice for those working in the city - the service is good and quite prompt, the food tasty, and the atmosphere relaxed.

Although some may prefer more hearty offerings for their lunch-time feast, this up-market deli has definitely found its niche in both the Viaduct, and Newmarket.
