Kopio - CLOSED
Hands down the best takeaways in town — end of.
Overview
Back in the neck of the Parnell woods, Kopio returns with a short and simple menu consisting of only a handful of well-crafted dishes that deserve a demure round of applause. If this was a music concert, I'd be screaming 'encore'.
The wow-factor lies in the food (and generous pours); you can taste the heart and soul of their passion in their Beef Rendang ($28). Cooked for five hours and stirred every 10 minutes, Arthur admitted that more often than not, he falls asleep while creating this halo-deserving dish. Awarded 'Best Beef Rendang in Auckland', my usual 15-minute indecisive ponder was cut short to 2. In fact, I've already decided my next visit's order to be the award-winning seafood curry ($28) and roti ($5) — boom, efficiency.
If you're craving something flavourful yet healthy with a home-made vibe, this is the place to be. Their Nasi Goreng tasted like my long-lost grandma's signature dish ($24), which is impossible since I'm not even Malaysian but you'll get what I mean once you taste it. Considering that Kopio has also won the People's Choice Award, I'm surprised I didn't step foot in here before. It's one of those must-try hidden gems that instantly becomes everyone's go-to takeaway store.
Another selling point for this hotspot is Arthur's unmeasured pours of wine and spirits that sing the heavenly 'glug glug glug' song which in turn, will make your eyes widen from the confusing dichotomous feelings of being super stoked yet guilty. A "single shot" of Johnnie Walker Black must've been (I kid you not) four shots worth ($9.50) — an unmatched gesture of gratuitous generosity that you won't receive elsewhere, except at your best friend's house.
One thing to note is that Kopio is not a fancy pants black tie establishment and it most definitely isn't for the pretentious who desire to preen and be seen. But it sure is one hell of a keeper for a night in sweatpants with the best takeaways in town.
