Overview

Perched on a hill on Waiheke Island, Mudbrick Winery has always been known as the perfect restaurant getaway for a sneaky proposal, wedding, or as the host was telling me 'a birthday party where a group of 16-year-olds flew in on a helicopter and had a party in our wine cellar'. Although you'll still be finding these bread and butter events at a place like this, you might also like to treat yourself to a special lunch or dinner out to the restaurant.

Mudbrick Winery's spiced butternut soup ($23) was honestly the best soup I've ever had (sorry mum). I think it had something to do with the madras curry granola they cleverly added to the mixture, giving the usually smooth and creamy butternut soup a bit of attitude. Pair it off with a Mudbrick Reserve syrah 2012 or the 'Shepherds Point' chardonnay 2012 and you'll have a taste symphony in your mouth. Another killer, the Atlantic king scallops and Kataifi prawns ($25) had amazingly flavoursome prawns and green curry. Join forces with a glass of Bollinger for an acidic tang with your seafood.

Mains-wise, the 'Wellington-style' grilled venison ($49) was what you would expect from a place like this — gourmet, thought-out and just plain tasty. The deconstructed rhubarb tarte ($17.50) and a glass of sparkling antipodes was a nice closing chapter to an amazing sitting.

Mudbrick's a good one to try if you'd like a miniature escape with dazzling views, great wine and delicious food.
