Overview
Located in City Works Depot on Wellesley Street, Odette’s Eatery has been the talk of the town in recent months. My Instagram feed has been a constant stream of snaps from all the movers and the shakers oozing trendiness there. I finally got to the point where I had to see for myself, after all I had heard wonders about the décor.
Other than the décor, the reviews I had heard from friends who’d stopped by weren’t that great. A little expensive and slightly disappointing for a place that had made such an entrance. I would most definitely have to disagree with these opinions, maybe my expectations had been lowered but I only have wonderful things to say about my time at Odette's.
My dinner date and I decided to opt for the plates to share with recommendations from our waitress. She was fantastic, she was enthusiastic about the menu and I trusted her choices completely. That trust paid off.
Each plate to share was bursting with Middle Eastern inspiration, executed with the freshest ingredients and upmost creativity. First came the Vanuatu prawn steam buns with avocado smash, lime and crisp shallot ($8 each). I was delighted the steam bun micro trend had cropped up here. I can only highly recommend these, the texture of the soft bun with the crispy prawns and the avocado smash only made me want more with each bite.
We fought over the king fish carpaccio with horseradish, shaved coconut and puffed wild rice ($16). Judging by the enthusiasm of my date I would say this was also a sure winner. I loved the crunch of the coconut and wild rice, I wish we had a plate of this each. Luckily the Harmony BBQ pork belly with chermoula, crackle and aioli ($17) came out last because it’s rich and creamy flavours well and truly finished us off. Who do I have to marry so I can be made this everyday? Seriously.
Between the lively chat, the excellent dishes and plotting how to run away with all the tableware, we had a wonderful time. With my favourite beer bar located just next door, Odette’s is the perfect place to migrate to after work drinks. It’s humming Tuesday night atmosphere also makes it a relaxing place for a date or catch up with a good friend. A little on the pricey side for the portion sizes, but the bang per bite overcame that.
