Movember is the leading men's health charity that raises funds for mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. And after everything this year has thrown at us, these all-too-common health issues deserve more attention than ever.
It's super easy to get involved: just register via the website or app, start collecting donations from your friends and family and then just... stop shaving your top lip on October 31. But to really ensure the new mo makes an impact and your donors get the biggest bang for their buck, you need to start with a clean slate. So, we've put together a list of top-notch barbershops around Brisbane where you can get a quality wet shave in preparation for your month of mo growing. This uber-cool barbershop has called Fortitude Valley home for a few years now — first in design firm Wrightson Stewart’s workshop and now in its own shopfront on Ann Street. Owner-operator Ryan Reed hails from the Sunshine Coast and has been in the biz for over a decade having honed his craft in London before returning to Brisbane to open his own store. The sleek new space, which Ryan.Co took over in late-2019, is worlds away from the retro barbershops that you’re used to seeing. But it suits its trend-forward, inner city location well, with a stripped-back industrial vibe — think bare concrete walls and a largely monochrome palette save for a few indoor plants. Here, you can expect to shell out about $30 for a standard or buzz cut, and $60 for a luxe face shave, and appointments are a must.

There is a tendency for some barbershops to get hung up on tradition. And, look, we get it. There are centuries of history connected to the trade to honour — and these barbers are wielding some pretty sharp objects, too. But one barbershop that doesn’t take itself too seriously is Tommy Two Blades. You’ll find this barbershop inside a sweet little weatherboard cottage in Teneriffe. Aside from the retro barber chairs, it has a mostly contemporary fit-out, including pendant lighting and illustrations all over the wall. Oh, and we can’t forget the resident shop pup who is always up for a cuddle while you wait.
Not only are the barbers always up for a little cheeky banter, but they’re also willing to get a little experimental with hairdos. So if you’ve been considering a blue tint or some creative fades, you needn’t worry about being talked out of it. Prices vary based on which stylist you get but they start at $42.50 for a standard cut and $45 for a hot towel cut-throat shave using a facial steamer.

Chances are, you’ve walked past a Jimmy Rod’s Barbershop once or twice. There are ten in Brisbane alone, including this one in Broadway Mall, another in Westfield Chermside and the original in Oxley, which Jimmy Rod first opened in 2003.
