Daily Detours for the Week of October 30

In partnership with

Featuring hand-rolled sushi burritos.

When your nine-to-five plays out like a well-oiled machine, it can sometimes feel like each week is a little same-same. But Brisbane is brimming with a fine bounty of things to experience and explore each and every day. So aside from casual laziness and a little lack of inspiration, there's really nothing stopping you from squeezing some adventure and spontaneity into your schedule.

We've teamed up with Mazda3 to help you celebrate the little things that bring a sense of adventure to life. Shake things up, as we give you seven different detours to take each week in Brisbane. From Monday to Sunday, enrich your everyday with one completely achievable activity that inspires you to take the scenic route as you go about your daily routine.

This week, try a sushi burrito, camp overlooking the ocean and unwind with jazz. Plus, we've got your future detours sorted for the new few weeks here.

All require no more effort than a tiny break from the norm — what's your excuse for not trying them all?

Sushi Burrito Picnic and Ferry Ride

Nothing takes away those Monday blues like having an epic post-work activity planned. Make good on your ‘I’m going to eat healthily this week’ promise and grab yourself a feed from Suki in Bulimba. The fusion eatery has taken the best of Japanese, Mexican and Hawaiian food culture to offer up sushi burritos and poke bowls (Hawaiian salad bowls packed full of succulent veggies and raw fish). Once you’ve stocked up on dinner, jump on the City Cat and head over to New Farm Park for an evening picnic by the river. Spring is the season for jacarandas, so with any luck, you’ll be able to enjoy your dinner on a glorious blanket of purple flowers.

Live Jazz at Doo-Bop Basement Jazz Bar

Hidden underground in the CBD is Brisbane’s answer to the jazz bars of New York City. Named after the last studio album recorded by Grammy-award winning jazz great Miles Davis, Doo-Bop’s Basement Jazz Bar is housed in a Federation-era warehouse at 101 Edward Street and features a large stage with a 1955 refurbished Steinway grand piano all the way from the Big Apple. Grab yourself some dinner and a cocktail and settle in for an exceptional Tuesday night listening to everything from contemporary jazz to bebop to swing. What better way to unwind after a tough day at the office?

Mother! at American Express Openair Cinemas

Summer’s only a month away, which means open-air cinemas are back! Is there any better way to experience the ultimate combo of watching a film and devouring popcorn than under the stars? Grab your significant other (or just anyone who wouldn’t mind you clinging onto for support in the jumpy scenes) and head to see Darren Aronofsky’s latest creepy thriller, Mother!, at the American Express Open Air Cinemas at South Bank. The food menu is being curated by Sydney charcuterie aficionados Salt Meats Cheese, with salumi boards, pizza and pasta available. Fork out a few extra bucks for a lounger, and relax in style.

    Sad Grrrls Festival

The biggest evidence that people are crying out for change in the music industry is this: Sad Grrrls Festival is back and literally, not figuratively, bigger and better than ever. Prepare for another year of rad babes and a strong gender diverse line-up. They’ve added a Brisbane leg this year at the Brightside, after last year selling out Sydney’s Factory Theatre and Melbourne’s Reverence Hotel. Although secret headliners are still to be announced, we know that Moaning Lisa, Huntly, Rachel Maria Cox and Antonia and The Lazy Susans will be playing in every city alongside a heavy local line up of talent. Sad Grrrls Festival was started by the DIY record label and booking agency Sad Grrrls Club who aim to boost non-male voices in the music industry.

    Brisbane Dog Lovers Show 2017

Birds will chirp, rainbows will form and the sun will shine a little brighter over Brisbane Showgrounds when the award-winning Dog Lovers Show comes to Brisbane for the very first time. The show has been to Sydney and Melbourne for the last few years — and, let us tell you, it involves a lot of pats, licks and parades. And a dedicated puppy cuddle zone. Bounding into the Royal International Convention Centre on the weekend of November 4 and 5 (from 9.30am till 5pm each day), the Brisbane Dog Lovers Show will see thousands of dedicated pooch fans celebrating the noble four-legged monarch of human companionship. There’ll be dozens of furry friends available for adoption from rescue groups across Queensland in the Rescue Dog Zone, where you can learn up on what’s actually involved with adoption. But hold up, you came here to cuddle pooches. We’re getting there. Punters can make their way to the Pat-A-Pooch zone, where you can cuddle up to a wide range of Australia’s most loveable and popular breeds from puppy to adult dogs — we’re talking uppity dachshunds to fluffball samoyeds, all up in your grill. This has undeniably been the main attraction of the events in Melbourne and Sydney, and gives kitten cafes a run for their money. There’s plenty more happening over the two days of furry friended fun. Not sure which type of schnoochie is perfect for you? Sign up for a Perfect Match session where you’ll be paired with your ultimate dog breed. Already found your tail-waggin’ soulmate? Get some expert tips on training, behaviour, first-aid and nutrition in seminars by some of Australia’s big name vets. Plus, there’s going to be a doggie kissing booth. Yep, pucker up. Tickets are $20 online or $35 on-site (adult, ages 16 and over). Everything is free (including cuddles) once you have purchased your ticket, obviously excepting food and drink.
