Overview

One of Brisbane's, if not Australia's, most dynamic drinking, dining and shopping precincts, James Street, is now home to Aunty. Spread across the sprawling space that previously housed City Winery and Campos Coffee, the 400-square-metre venue can accommodate up to 100 guests. Behind it is Brisbane hospitality stalwart The Tassis Group, and the result is polished and considered, but still warm: elegant, but never precious.

The menu showcases modern Asian cuisine rooted in traditional techniques. The woodfire grill sits at the heart of the kitchen, bringing intensity and smokiness to dishes such as pressed wagyu skewers, charred lamb ribs and char siu–glazed wagyu tri tip.

The generous menu lends itself to sharing amongst the table. Signature dishes include a whole chilli mud crab, cooked to order and served live from the tank, and duck served two ways with spiced fig jus. There are plenty of fresh and light entrees too, including Sichuan cucumber salad and raw kingfish. They sit alongside a range of moreish dim sum, such as chicken xiao long bao, Moreton Bay bug siu mai, and cauliflower and pumpkin spring rolls.

Dropping by earlier in the day? Lunch specials from $28 are served daily until 3.30pm, and Aunty's Cheers runs in the bar from 3–5.30pm, with $12 lobster rolls and golden sand calamari. If you're settling in for the evening, make your way through the extensive wine list, featuring approximately 250 labels curated to complement the menu's flavours.
