Overview

In the rather trashy reality that is Surfers Paradise, it’s nice to walk upon the gem that is Black Coffee Lyrics. Located on the first level of an old arcade, meander past the mini-chinatown stack of eateries and upstairs to what feels like a poorly-kept secret of a café, restaurant and bar.

There is something genuinely magic about this place that transports you to another realm. It helps that the inside could best be described as a cross between an old English pub and Arthur and Molly Weasley’s house. Each wall, corner and crevice is decked out with something to keep the eyes interested – from old Rolling Stone covers and a twisty stack of books on a pole, to raw brick and little plastic green army men scaling the ceiling. This is the sort of place distinguished gentlemen would come for a drink, but where a woman would never feel out of place.

For those who love beer, Black Coffee Lyrics is the place to go. With an extensive bottle list plus taps and a revolving range of single batch brews there is no shortage of choice. And with a cocktail list to be envious of, don’t walk past the Rubadubdub –a mix of manuka honey, peppermint, kaffir lime and berry. Those who are fans of the espresso martini it’s good to know it has its own list here – keep it classic or try an ivory latte, mocha martini or chai lattini for a buzz.

As for food, Black Coffee Lyrics is a social place with their menu listed into small, medium and large plates plus wood-fired pizzas. The ‘Babybert’ is an entrée hard to skim past – a small oven-baked Witches Chase camembert cheese drizzled with jelly box honey. Three more of these please.

If you ever thought ‘duck, chocolate, beetroot’ would never work together, Black Coffee Lyrics are out to prove you wrong. Served deconstructed on a board, a sliced duck breast sits on a goat cheese smear, next to a chocolate ganache with brioche, and a beetroot reduction. If you’re game for game meat, try this one. Dessert wise, it needn’t be said, but if the fresh Black Coffee Lyrics filled donuts grace the menu – order them immediately.
