Overview

The name Gypsies Wagon suits this venue to a tee — set up in suburban Gaythorne, the supper club leaves a lasting impression with friendly staff, other-worldly decor and delicious food. Coming from the same stock as (and located right next door to) Hansell and Gretel Espresso and Breakfast Bar, this new big sister has brought a darker side to the north. The menu is a mashup of American diner fare with Latin American twists, and the venue boasts a fully stocked bar to take you well into the night.

First timers need only one dish – The Gypsies Swag ($65). Take the menu for a test drive with this dinner for two, starter for four banquet featuring all of Gypsies' signature foods. Chow down on honey soy sesame hot wings, slow-cooked beef rib, chipotle meatballs, snack-sized kranskys, and citrus-grilled haloumi with charred turkish bread, house pickles, beer-battered fries and the incredible Argentinian gaucho jerky. You should probably order extra jerky too, just saying (and please send recipe).

Besides the aforementioned food, Gypsies Wagon also do a range of build-your-own burgers, a few salads, sides for the incredibly hungry and good ol' mac 'n' cheese. If you're foolish like us, or clearly not on a first date, you too can swap the 'I'm not crazy - mild' wings for the 'I'm crazy - burn me' wings. Expect to shed a few tears, and use up all the napkins.

Space wise, the intimate diner consists of a dining room out front, and a bar, lounge and ample boardgames in the back. Take your pick from craft beers, bourbon-based cocktails, and, of course, the signature Pisco Sour.

Sometimes staff can make or break a venue, and Gypsies Wagon have nailed the perfect mix of friendly and knowledgeable, creating a welcoming space that's not intimidating. Let it be known, you may not make it out without having tried the Fireball Whisky.

Suburban bars work harder than those found in the city centre as they rely on their neighbours and local community for support. Gypsies Wagon have taken this in their stride, proving that friendly staff, a humble attitude and a quality product will have the people coming back. We'll be crossing the river to do it all again soon.
