Daily Detours for the Week of November 27

Featuring live jazz and cheeseboards.
When your nine-to-five plays out like a well-oiled machine, it can sometimes feel like each week is a little same-same. But Brisbane is brimming with a fine bounty of things to experience and explore each and every day. So aside from casual laziness and a little lack of inspiration, there's really nothing stopping you from squeezing some adventure and spontaneity into your schedule.
We've teamed up with Mazda3 to help you celebrate the little things that bring a sense of adventure to life. Shake things up, as we give you seven different detours to take each week in Brisbane. From Monday to Sunday, enrich your everyday with one completely achievable activity that inspires you to take the scenic route as you go about your daily routine.
This week, go swimming on your lunch break, find a bar doing $1 oysters and settle in for a Sunday session of live jazz and cheese. Plus, we've got your future detours sorted for the new few weeks here.
All require no more effort than a tiny break from the norm — what's your excuse for not trying them all?

Confession time: when was the last time you ducked down for a swim at South Bank? Tourists travel from all over the world to marvel at this inner city man-made beach, but locals often forget that we have such a stunning stretch of sand at our fingertips. Monday blues got you desperate for an escape from the urban grind? Streets Beach has enjoyed a recent makeover, with the spruced-up pools the ideal spot for a few lazy mid-week laps. ‘Big call’ we hear you scoff. Well, yes, it seems like every Brisbanite has a ride-or-die sushi joint they are loyal to. But hear us out: Sushi Kotobuki has got some serious game. What started as a tiny East Brisbane standalone has expanded to include a sparkly new sister venue in the CBD. But hey — you are a discerning sushi connoisseur! You aren’t easily swayed by shiny new things! Fair call, but we challenge you to try the cream cheese chicken roll and not be impressed. It’s that darn good. Takeaway Tuesday be damned — this food deserves to be enjoyed on a plate, not in plastic.

Do your hump day plans usually include Netflix, toast and quickly fading memories of a weekend long gone? We get it — everyone knows what that rut feels like. That makes Holey Moley Mini Golf Bar the ultimate mid-week stress buster. And at $16.50 per player for nine holes of golf, it’s wallet-friendly too. Play your way around a pop-culture infused course, with everything from The Simpsons to Game of Thrones represented at different points.

Yes, we’re all working for the weekend, and Madame Rouge is here to help us get there. Between 4pm to 6pm on Thursday and Friday, Madame Rouge serves up $1 oysters to help you celebrate the end of the week. There’s no missing numeral there. One shiny coin is all you’ll pay for freshly shucked molluscs at Fortitude Valley’s French bar and bistro. You will have to buy a drink to get the super cheap seafood — but with just one drink, those cheap, delicious oysters are all yours.

If your Friday knock-offs are more bland than banging, then you ought to consider getting this Aussie hip hop act to kick off your weekend. Horrorshow has played all the major national festivals (think Big Day Out, Splendour and Groovin’ the Moo) and toured Europe while supporting local faves Hilltop Hoods. These guys regularly play for crowds of up to 10,000 people, but this upcoming gig at Woolly Mammoth promises to be a more stripped-back intimate set. Hang around after the show to crush a few lawn games on the AstroTurf — think bocce and (perennial fave) giant Jenga.

Is there anything more soul-crushing than doing your weekly grocery shopping? The packed aisles, the irritated checkout operator, the trolley that won’t steer straight? No thanks. Take your food shop up several notches by stopping by Davies Park Markets for a big box of farm-fresh produce. Need a little more encouraging to get out of bed on a Saturday? The food stalls at Davies Park are worthy of the trip alone — every imaginable cuisine is represented, plus there is plenty of seating so you can enjoy your brekkie comfortably (without the usual din of your regular brunch haunt).

There are Sunday sessions, and then there are Sunday sessions. As varied as your state of mind on the last day of the weekend, some call for boozy brunches, others for chilled evenings — and as Vieille Branche is happy to demonstrate, some just need a relaxed bit of jazz. That’s what Sunday Hot Club is all about: hanging out, soaking in great jazz and French gypsy sounds, and enjoying some cheese and wine. It does take place in a French cafe, after all. Each week, gypsy violinist Jan Van Dijk from Swing Dynamique will take to the stage with a selection of local and French musicians, and offer up the soundtrack to your cruisy arvo. Making an ace shindig even better, there’ll also be Emile & Solange cheeseboards on offer, plus French wine and craft beers on tap. Fabuleux! Doors open at 1pm, and while the music doesn’t kick off until 2pm, arriving early to score a good seat is recommended.
