Overview

It's the end of the working week, you're itching for a night out and there's only one person you want to channel: Kevin Bacon. As he demonstrated in the 80s wonder that is Footloose, there's no better way to blow off steam than with an epic boogie. However, we recommend one-upping good ol' Kevin. To 'kick off the Sunday shoes' is not enough — kick off Friday's and Saturday's shoes, too.

To help you find the right place to make shapes, we've teamed up with Heineken to bring you Brisbane's best spots for a weekend boogie. They're the kind of joints where you can grab a beer, hit the dance floor, strut your stuff and forget about your worries. And cut loose, footloose, obviously.

As its name suggests, Retro’s is all about looking back and loving it. Yes, it’s a venue completely dedicated to old-school jams and making sure you make the most of them — and all smack-bang in the middle of the Brunswick Street Mall. Expect a playlist pumping non-stop 80s, 90s and 00s tunes to take you back in time, as well as a deeply nostalgic atmosphere. From brews to boogying — to everything from Blur to Billy Idol to Cher’s ‘Believe’ — to looking up at disco balls, it’s all on the bill here. As are plenty of parties, so prepare to have company.

Weekly Latin dance sessions, Brazilian beats, and an array of drum and bass, trance and techno — from both local and big-name international DJs — are on the bill at Capulet. In fact, if your feet aren’t moving in this Brunswick Street bar, you must be injured. Or you’ve stopped to enjoy your beer, which is perfectly understandable. Here, you’ll dance beneath lanterns and greenery until the early hours. Indeed, if anything is going to get you moseying — or boogying — up to this end of Brunswick Street, it’s this always-buzzing venue.

Dating back to 1885, the Wickham is one of Brisbane’s longest-standing pubs — and also one of its most accessible. Think drag shows, ultraviolet parties, tribute acts and a long list of other events to get you, your mates (and all of Brisbane) dancing. Known for its LGBTQI lineup, everyone is welcome, whether you’re keen on glowing in the dark, screaming to Madonna or boogying in a no-hassle space. When you’re taking a breather, hang out in the garden — the courtyard bar serves both booze and food, so you’ll have everything you need.

Maybe, you’ve just tucked into dinner and now fancy a dance. Perhaps you’ve just been to the game and have some energy to burn. Or, you could just be wandering around the inner west, but don’t feel like venturing into the city or the Valley. Whichever category you fall into, Darling and Co on Given Terrace can help. Dancing isn’t always the main attraction here, but you’ll find plenty of space and music to boogie to — particularly on Friday and Saturday nights when a DJ hits the decks from 5pm.
