Four Foodie Events to Tuck Into This Week in Brisbane

Winter's almost done, but the comfort food's still cranking.

Winter's almost done with its chilly bullshit, but before you can pack away your woolies just yet, Brisbane's cooking up some serious comfort food that's much better enjoyed in the crisp, colder weather.

There's a handful of deliciously food-focused events happening this week, so we thought we'd put them all on one table for you. Pick one course, or make a degustation of them all. Or you could just go and inhale some popcorn watching Sausage Party. Your choice.

    Mt Gravatt Marketta

Anything the Gold Coast can do, Brisbane can do too, right? Well, maybe not when it comes to beaches — but as far as evening market get-togethers are concerned, we can give it a good try.

That’s exactly what the Mt Gravatt Marketta is doing. A sibling shindig to the beloved Miami Marketta, it’s bringing food from Good Food Catering Co, The Frying Piggy Food Truck, Little Havana Food Truck, Barbecue Mafia, Heven-yah Gelato, Little Wahaca, Samba Catering Co and more to Mt Gravatt Showgrounds every Saturday evening from 4-10pm. Plus drinks and music, of course.

After launching last weekend, it looks set to become a popular Saturday night hangout on the other side of the river. If wandering around a market, filling your stomach at food stalls, listening to live tunes and grabbing a few beverages sounds like a good time, you’re in luck.

    Boatrocker Cheesey Sunday Afternoon

The Commodores and Faith No More might’ve been easy like Sunday morning, but at Saccharomyces Beer Cafe, you can be cheesy like Sunday afternoon. And, let’s face it, who doesn’t want to spend the last hours of their weekend gorging on dairy products while enjoying a few beverages?

At Boatrocker Cheesey Sunday Afternoon, you’ll sample five beers from Boatrocker Brewery paired with five cheeses from Fino Fine Foods. You’ll fork out $45 for a few hours of eating and drinking fun, and we can guarantee that your stomach will thank you for the deliciousness.

Now, we know what you’re thinking: doesn’t something like this happen in Brissie every few weeks? At the moment, it certainly seems like it. But hey, if matching quality beers with tasty slices of cheese is the city’s newest food trend, we’re all for it.

    Sandstone Point Hotel's Strawberry Festival

They’re red, sweet and juicy — and they’re everyone’s favourite fruit. They’re also grown in abundance around Queensland. Did you know that 40 percent of the state’s strawberries come from the Moreton Bay region?

Well, you do now, and you might just want to celebrate that fact. All you need to do is head on over to Bribie Island for Sandstone Point Hotel’s second annual Strawberry Festival, and you can do just that.

Because you can never have too much of a good thing, the free event will paint the pub pink with farm-fresh strawberries, strawberry milkshakes, strawberry ice cream, scones with strawberry jam, and chocolate-coated strawberries. If you’re still hungry for more, a strawberry-eating competition is also on the agenda. Then, wash it all down at a bar serving strawberry-flavoured beverages.

    Effervescence

If you don’t break out the bubbly when you first hear about south-east Queensland’s newest festival, then you will when you get there. All things sparkling and alcoholic are in the spotlight at Effervescence, after all. Indeed, the event’s name both nods to its favourite type of beverage and describes the sensation champers-swilling attendees are bound to experience.

And yes, we really do mean champagne, as in the fizzy wines specifically from France’s Champagne region. In fact, it was a trip to the area that gave champagne enthusiast and educator Amanda Reboul the idea to start the festival.

Fellow sparkling lovers have two options to get their drink on at Spicers Hidden Vale: walk the Champagne Trail, or hunker down for the weekend-long VIP package. The former offers an at-your-own-pace wander between themed tasting stations, complete with bread, cheese and charcuterie, plus games of boules and other activities. The latter serves up all that, as well as expert masterclasses, lunches, a degustation dinner and a cocktail evening — but only if you have a spare couple of grand to really treat yo’self and then some.
