The Five Most Over-the-Top Takeaway Eats to Get in Brisbane

From toasties loaded with bacon mac 'n' cheese to Nashville-style fried chicken.

We've all been there — those moments in life when nothing else but deep-fried, cheesy, buttery, salty goodness will kill your cravings. It's Friday night, work is over for the week and you just want to smash something ridiculously gluttonous so you can really sink into that Netflix coma on the couch. Or, maybe it's Sunday evening, you've had a few too many beverages at afternoon drinks and the only thing that'll satisfy that deep dark void in your stomach is some greasy comfort food.

Luckily for us, Brisbane has some pretty amazing places to hit up when the decadent flavour cravings hit. It was a tough job, but we've managed to narrow it down to our favourite five across the city.

There aren’t too many things that kill takeaway cravings (or a hangover) like a snack box. And it makes sense — it’s basically a Greek take on loaded fries, topping the hot chips with flavourful meat, sauce and Mediterranean-style dip. What’s not to love? Without a doubt, one of the best places to grab an authentic snack box in Brisbane is at The Yiros Shop. And, good news — there are several locations across the city. Head to either Fortitude Valley, Newmarket, Cannon Hill, South Brisbane or Capalaba and grab yourself one of these delectable Greek treats. Take your pick of juicy lamb, chicken or pork and pair with fluffy pita bread, melitzanosalata (roasted eggplant dip) and haloumi.

What started as a humble burger joint on Burleigh Beach has since become a local favourite in Brisbane, too. The proof is in the pudding — or, should we say the burgers. Thanks to the list of 17-plus burgers on the menu, plus plenty of tasty bar snacks and craft beers to help you really smash that hunger. You could start off easy with the humble cheeseburger — which, mind you, still features fried onion staws and maple bacon. But, if you’re game, have a crack at the Triple Loco burger, featuring three wagyu beef patties, triple jack cheese, triple maple bacon, applewood smoked pulled pork, smoked jalapeños, fried onion straws and slaw, served between two grilled cheese sandwiches.

Will nothing satisfy your craving for junk food better than fried chicken? We hear you. Fat Belly Jack’s serves some of the best fried chicken in the game. With a ordering system that allows you to choose your style, heat and side, you can really tailor your chicken to your tastes. If you like it hot, Fat Belly Jack’s has thoughtfully added a heat level to the menu called ‘really f#cking hot’ — which features some of the world’s hottest chillies. You can enjoy Nashville-style fried chicken alongside a selection of sides, including buttery creamed corn, slaw and mac ‘n’ cheese. Plus, if you decide to sit in rather than take away, US beers and boilermakers are on offer, too.

If your flavour cravings are coming from somewhere a little further east, make tracks to Newstead’s late-night Japanese diner. Zero Fox dishes out a selection of indulgent Japanese dishes, including tasty ramen, karaage chicken, katsudon chicken and chicken katsu curry, with a few Korean influences thrown in for good measure (see: kimchi fries and vegan bibimbap). The serving sizes are generous and everything on the menu is available to take away, but if you stick around, the seating is plentiful and the dog status is friendly. You’ll also get to enjoy a schooner or two from the ever-rotating tap list of craft beer.

Located in Post Office Square, Melt Brothers offers the type of toasted sandwiches you dreamed of as a kid (but your mum wouldn’t let you use all the cheese in the fridge to make). Here, you’ll hit the motherload of decadent toasties loaded with multiple types of cheese and more. Our pick is the M.C. Cheesy, which features mac ‘n’ cheese, maple bacon, smokey barbecue sauce, mozzarella and aged cheddar. And the best part? They’re all less than a tenner. For a truly indulgent meal, throw in some sides — like loaded potato gems or mozzarella sticks — and wash it down with a chocolate fudge thick shake.
