The days of sipping a caffeinated brew and remaining blissfully unaware of its environmental impact are long gone; however, so are the days of cafes and other coffee-related businesses not doing their bit to help. From plantable coffee cups, recyclable containers and BYO mug campaigns to compostable coffee pods, mushrooms grown in discarded grounds and sheets made from repurposed coffee yarns, there's no shortage of eco-conscious coffee-related activities and products — and now, there's coffee cups made out of coffee waste as well. Meet HuskeeCup, a reusable alternative to ceramic drinkware that's made from recycled coffee husks. It's the brainchild of a group of Australian coffee industry professionals including Pablo & Rusty's Saxon Wright, and aims to reduce coffee-related discards in both growing beans and making hot cuppas. "We wanted to create a closed-loop system, so we thought if we could use waste from farming to create a cup we could solve problems both at the cafe and farm level," he told the Sydney Morning Herald. The cups are designed not only to do make a difference on an environmental level, reusing organic material that's usually thrown away, but to look good too — and keep coffee hotter for longer. They come in three sizes, with a one-size-fits-all saucer and lid. HuskeeCup has just finished a fundraising campaign to start production, exceeding its target more than five times over.
