In 2019, thanks to the sublime period-set romance Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Céline Sciamma directed one of the best movies of the year. Rich in emotion, detail and pitch-perfect performances, the French film had audiences everywhere swooning — but, as great as it is, it's just one of many stellar features on the filmmaker's resume.

Before Sciamma won Cannes Film Festival's Best Screenplay and Queer Palm awards for Portrait of a Lady on Fire, she made girl gang drama Girlhood — and made absolutely excellent use of Rihanna's 'Diamonds' in the process. Before that, she explored a ten-year-old girl's arrival in a new neighbourhood in Tomboy. And prior to that, she spent time with three teens who meet at a local pool in Water Lillies.

Sciamma's filmic resume also spans several screenwriting credits for other filmmakers — including Young Tiger, about a 15-year old Indian boy illegally smuggled into France so he can find work; Being 17, where two classmates are forced to confront their feelings about each other; and The Wind Turns, which focuses on a couple facing personal dramas as they attempt to install a wind turbine on their organic farm.

Alongside gorgeous, heart-swelling stop-motion animation My Life as a Courgette, all of the above films are on the bill at Portrait of a Woman on Fire: Céline Sciamma. Running between Friday, March 13–Wednesday, March 25, it's the Gallery of Modern Art's tribute to Sciamma — and entry is free.
