Overview
As far as operettas go, The Merry Widow stands out from the crowd — particularly in Opera Queensland's latest production. It's an account of romance, which might sound like usual opera fare. But, directed and choreographed by Graeme Murphy, it's also a Parisian-set art deco treat in its glittery look; think free-flowing Champagne, luxe ballroom costuming and a French salon vibe.
Story-wise, the show follows lovers Hanna and Count Danilo. She's an unexpected heiress after just eight days of marriage, while he's the playboy suitor society wants her to wed next. Their tale floats across the stage in a sea of singing and dancing, in OQ's first mainstage production for the year — taking over QPAC's Lyric Theatre from June 22–30.
It's also the company's fastest-selling production in more than a decade; however if you're under 30 and want to go along, you're in for a bargain. In a Broadway-style rush ticketing system, just head to the box office on the day of the show, show your ID and nab a $30 ticket. It's a one-ticket-per-person kind of deal, but bring your friends and they can pick up their own.
