If it's been a minute since you last got down to your local cinema, perhaps a fundraising screening held as part of Refugee Week is the perfect excuse to change that. Running from 2.30pm on Sunday, June 14, The Social Studio is taking over a Cinema Nova screen to present a special session featuring Flee, the Oscar-nominated animated documentary by Danish filmmaker Jonas Poher Rasmussen. Based on the true story of Rasmussen's childhood friend, Amin, the documentary illustrates Amin's escape from Afghanistan to Denmark as a refugee, moving between past and present as he recounts stories of family, love and the after-effects of war. Upon its 2022 release, The Guardian gave it five stars, describing it as a "fantastically moving story of a refugee's life-saving secret." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzUVeuX1u04 Yet that's not the only screening presented on the day. There's also a special screening of Masoomah Jawid's short fashion film, The Arrival — the winner of Best Student Film at the 2025 Melbourne Fashion Festival Fashion Film Awards. Here, Masoomah draws on her own Afghan heritage to explore the profound immigrant experience, delving into the emotions associated with one world and being transplanted into another. Alongside plenty of fascinating cinematic goodness, all tickets to this crucial fundraiser include popcorn, soft drink and a choc-top. Plus, they'll be prizes on the door for a lucky few. If you're unfamiliar with The Social Studio, this enduring fashion-focused social enterprise provides free education and training programs to refugee communities, including the flagship Cert III program in apparel, fashion and textiles.
