If all that springs to mind when you think of Polish cuisine is drinking vodka in the snow, then it is time to broaden your horizons. Check out The Auckland Polish Association's mid-winter market day to become a pierogi aficionado. Located at Polish House in Sandringham, the annual market day will be showcasing an array of delicious traditional culinary delights. Now is your chance to sample homemade treats such as sciastka (cookies), kiełbasy (Polish sausage) and more. We can't talk about Polish food without giving a mention to the legendary pierogi. Pierogi are central and eastern Europe's version of dumplings and can be savoury or sweet. Potato, meat and cheese often make up traditional savoury pierogi. The sweet varieties are often stuffed with berries and cream and dusted with icing sugar. Circle Sunday, 9 August on your calendar, dig out your stretchy pants and head over to Sandringham for a taste of Poland. Most stalls will only accept cash.
