Late night antics in Queensland, sorted.

Queensland might be the Sunshine State, but Brisbane's nightlife scene keeps the city buzzing long after sunset. A night out might start with dinner on the breezy riverfront, but it rarely ends there. From honky-tonk bars and Latin dance parties to Y2K-themed boogies, here are eight late-night bars and clubs in Brissy (and two for Gold Coasters) – some stay open till 3 am, in case the afters call.

Babylon
The Brisbane River is a wonder in its own right, but Babylon turns the waterfront into a Mediterranean postcard. The Levant-inspired venue starts in a clay-toned dining room with an extensive vege- and seafood-forward menu, before opening onto two cascading bar terraces. We recommend grabbing a table beneath a palm tree, mezze or Mangal-grilled meats to share, and rounds of cocktails that riff on Middle Eastern flavours. After a Paloma spiked with pimento peppers or a bourbon sipper punctuated by cardamom elixir, one drink easily becomes last drinks.

Death & Co Brisbane
For a sophisticated stop with world-class tipples, step into one of the candlelit nooks at Death & Co. Hailing from New York, the moody cocktail bar brings Great Gatsby-level glamour to the cellar of the Regatta Hotel – and it stays open well past midnight. Expect six modern classics that have been honed over 20 years – the Kingston Negroni trades traditional gin for Jamaican rum – alongside a larger list of seasonal sips and an elevated snack menu on the sideline.

Lefty's Music Hall
Americana rock is roaring at Lefty's, Brisbane's favourite honky-tonk saloon. Pair Southern-style bites with the bar's famous whisky apples, and then boogie the night away to a revolving roster of local and international acts playing till 2 am on Friday and Saturday.
Lone Star Sessions bring bluesy solo sets, while other nights could lean into indie rock, rowdy band-room moshes and the occasional hoedown. Lefty's has been one of the city's great live music venues since 2013 – even Keith Urban has performed within its taxidermy-lined walls.

The Wickham
Brisbane's proudest pub has been serving the LGBTQIA+ community since the '70s. Tucked inside a heritage-listed building in Fortitude Valley. The Wickham blends its historic bones with vintage furniture and a weather-proof beer garden built for long nights out.
There's always something on the calendar, from burlesque shows and drag nights to pop-diva-themed parties. Food and drink are a hoot too: bellinis come glittery; a Disco Fruit Tingle is served in a disco ball; and puppies get to order from their own dedicated $8 menu.

Hey Chica
Hey Chica brings a slice of Latin American nightlife to the heart of Fortitude Valley. Tequila- and rum-heavy drinks flow from the bar, fuelling a dancefloor dominated by Latin club hits, reggaeton and dance tracks. We recommend pre-gaming with share plates packed with punchy Latin American flavours – think a prawn tostados trio and tacos callejeros with bright pineapple salsa. In true fiesta fashion, the party rarely dips before 3 am on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Retro's
With DJs spinning nostalgic throwbacks from the '80s, '90s, and Y2K late into the night, Retro's keeps the golden age of party hits alive in Fortitude Valley (or Surfers' Paradise on the Gold Coast). If your ideal night out involves Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake or Outkast blasting from the speakers, get in here and grab a fishbowl cocktail – or spring for VIP bottle service if you've claimed one of the glowing booths.

Riverland
As its name suggests, Riverland captures the spirit of waterfront living. Framed by the iconic Story Bridge and its surrounding skyscrapers, the sprawling triple-decker feels designed for social drinking. Live music, chatter, and the clinking of glasses drift easily through the open air. Come for knock-off drinks, but don't be surprised if it turns into a big one.
Food and drinks are firmly grounded in the Sunshine State. Two container kitchens sling pub classics and a sizable snack offering made with seasonal Queensland produce, complementing the bar's local-leaning cocktails, Aussie wines, and 16 beers on tap.

Lulu Rooftop Bar
Balmy Gold Coast evenings are best spent at Lulu. The rooftop haunt brings live DJ beats, sweeping skyline views and big Miami energy to Surfer's Paradise. Ease into the night with a tapas spread, vino and cheeky cocktails like boozy frozé piled high with unlimited candy toppers, before the venue sheds its breeziness and transforms into a pulsing nightclub. When the dance floor beckons, round up the crew for shots – one famously tastes like a jam doughnut.
