Overview

If there's one buzzword that came out of COVID-19 it's pivot. One Brisbane venue that quickly turned on its heels was luxe underground bar Boom Boom Room. In BC (before COVID) times, you'd frequent the CBD haunt, located beneath the super-popular Donna Chang, for a cocktail or bottle of bubbles. Now, you head straight down to the opulent art deco digs and sit down to a Japanese feast as well. That's right, Boom Boom Room has transformed into an izakaya, calling itself Boom Boom Room Izakaya, naturally. And it's open come Friday, October 2.

Step into the moody Japanese-style restaurant and bar and you'll find the space is much the same, bar some new furniture and detailing. The old bank vaults are still there, available for private dining, and its old-world atmosphere remains. Due to current restrictions, the space now has a 140-person capacity (compared to its previous 250). The main change, however, is the menu. On it, you'll find fun Japanese bar snacks, such as miso-glazed toothfish yakitori, a barramundi katsu bao burger with bacon, kewpie tartare and pickled jalapeño, and sushi filled with scampi caviar or salmon roe. For drinks, expect a Japanese twist on the classic penicillin and the Hana, made with cherry blossom liqueur, vodka, lychee and green tea soda.

Boom Boom Room Izakaya opens Friday, October 2. To book, email [email protected] or call (07) 3243 4000.
