Overview

One hundred years ago, an Italian count named Camillo Negroni walked into a bar in Florence and ordered his americano with gin, rather than soda. He mightn't have known it then, but he'd started something special. The classic negroni — a simple, yet delicious mix of equal parts gin, Campari and sweet red vermouth — is celebrated every year as part of Negroni Week. And this year, its official sponsor Campari is changing things up.

Over the last six years, you've likely dropped into your local to order a classic negroni during the annual event. This year, you can learn to make those bittersweet cocktails at home — and support your favourite bars and bartenders from a distance.

Campari has collaborated with 50 leading bartenders in Australia and New Zealand to create two free e-books of classic negroni-adjacent recipes, like the americano and boulevardier. It features recipes put forward by the talented bartenders of Barangaroo House, Door Knock, Double Deuce Lounge and Bulletin Place in Sydney; Gin Palace, Capitano, Cumulus and Byrdi in Melbourne; Death & Taxes, Three Wolves and Canvas Club in Brisbane. Plus, Adelaide's Maybe Mae, Auckland's Deadshot, Hobart's Rude Boy and many others.

If you're already dab hand with a cocktail stirrer and want to level up your creativity at home, there are recipes that include sourdough, Tim Tams and banana bread. You'll find tips from bartenders such as Andrea Gualdi (Maybe Sammy), Michael Nguyen (Molly), Kieran Lee (The Barber Shop), Natalie Ng (Door Knock) and Michael Chiem (PS40). So there is a negroni to suit almost everyone, and any occasion.

Essentially, you'll be drinking at Australia's and New Zealand's best bars without leaving home. And when you do so, you're also encouraged to donate to charity partner Help Out Hospo, which is channelling every cent it receives towards industry workers who've lost work during the pandemic. Raise a negroni to your favourite bar, and take your negroni making skills to the next level.
