Hawthorne has a new dessert haven — and it's cute, quaint and oh-so tasty. In other words, Gateaux Cafe & Dessert is exactly what you want from an all-day place dedicated to the sweeter things in life. Just wait until you walk in, spy the display case filled with cakes, tarts, slices and pastries, and quickly get offered a taste of their custom-made ice cream.

In fact, trying not to devour their mint chocolate scoops or order a serving of waffles is an impossible task, as is attempting to confine your menu selections to just one kind of food. And, when it comes to getting a drink to match, both cold and warmer treats are available; think coffees, which are also served via a takeaway window, plus milkshakes in flavours such as Oreo and Nutella.

If the brightly-lit, friend-owned and -run Lindsay Street eatery has other drawcards, then it's their warm service and great location, even if the latter mightn't quite seem like it. Located around the corner from the busier Hawthorne Road, it's directly opposite the new cinema complex — and a stone's throw from the other, older cinema building too. There's your next post-dinner and movie snack sorted.
