Overview

Take a pinch of quirk, a spoonful of juxtapositions and a sprinkle of surprise and delight and you have Jacu Espresso.

Positioned on a main road in Norman Park is a small, unassuming, white-walled building — until you spot the AstroTurf, nanna-style outdoor furniture and pillow-topped milk crates, that is. If this setting piques your interest enough to venture inside, you may be slightly let down by the this looks-just-like-any-other-cafe interior, but the surprise and delight factor is abundantly clear in the coffee and food.

With all-day breakfasts the star, the fare is fresh and simple, using organic ingredients where possible. Choose from classic flavour combinations with a twist — like the BRAT with rocket and aioli instead of lettuce and avocado and a fried egg to top it off, or the smashed avocado with lemon feta and carrot jam. If you're a sweet tooth, the deliciously crunchy organic muesli with Barambah Organics Greek yoghurt and berries is sure to please, or for a truly indulgent twist opt for the cinnamon French toast with free-range bacon, maple and candied pecans.

And the coffee? Frothy, liquid gold. The baristas at Jacu clearly know their stuff, producing cups that are consistently creamy and smooth. With new beans and blends always on rotation and cold press, drip and filter brews making an appearance, you're sure to find your coffee match. Make sure you check out their latte art on Instagram too — it's coffee appreciation for the eyes.

Jacu Espresso is definitely a Southside go-to for a laidback weekend breakfast with the paper and Nanna's wicker lounge, or the perfect pit-stop should you need to quickly pull in off that "unassuming main road" to grab a coffee to go.
