Angelika Cinemas
New York's arthouse mainstay picked Brisbane, not London or Paris, for its first cinema outside the US.
Overview
Angelika Cinemas traces back to a single SoHo cinema that opened in New York in 1989 and grew into a byword for independent and specialty film in the city, helping build box-office runs for arthouse films. In 2023, Brisbane's Woolloongabba became its first location anywhere outside the US.
The eight-screen, 400-seat complex sits inside the South/City/SQ precinct, with three of its screens operating as SoHo Lounge cinemas — full recliner seating, table service and a licensed bar pouring wine, spirits and signature cocktails, so there's no need to leave your seat.

The Highline Terrace balcony bar offers outdoor seating overlooking the Brisbane city skyline, along with a lolly station for anyone sticking to the classics.
The cinema lineup leans into new releases, foreign and specialty film, and regular retrospective and themed seasons — the kind of programming that built the brand's reputation in New York in the first place.
