Overview
The Brisbane Powerhouse operated as a working power station on the New Farm riverbank for decades before it was decommissioned and eventually reborn as one of the city's most striking arts venues. More than two decades into its second life, it now runs a packed calendar of theatre, comedy, circus, dance and visual art across the old power station's industrial shell.
The riverside Pleasuredome — a 520-square-metre, handcrafted sailcloth tent built from materials sourced in the Netherlands and designed by stage designer Bruce McKinven — adds a 450-person events space beneath the site's Moreton Bay fig trees, flexible enough to run as a casual bar one night and a full theatre the next. For something more extreme, Vertigo serves a full dinner service 17 metres up the building's exterior wall, for anyone who'd rather eat their meal hanging off the venue than sitting in front of it. The Powerhouse is home to Brisbane Writers' Festival, Melt, the weekly farmers' markets, and Bar Alto.
