Mount Coot-tha

Overview

Sitting at the highest point in Brisbane, just 15 minutes from the CBD, the heritage-listed Mount Coot-tha Lookout has been a public drawcard since the reserve first opened in 1880. What was once a rough track is now a sealed road with a restaurant at the top, but a walking track remains for those who want to earn their view. From the summit, the view runs across the entire city and out to Moreton Bay, with the current lookout structure and its distinctive concrete canopy dating to a 1950s redesign by Brisbane City Architect FG Costello.

The lookout itself is open 24 hours, so you can chase either end of the day, and it sits within the wider Mt Coot-tha Reserve — Brisbane's largest natural area — alongside the 56-hectare Botanic Gardens and its 200,000-plus plants, plus nine separate picnic areas if you'd rather set up away from the crowds at the summit.
