Overview
This multi-site contemporary art gallery on Brisbane's South Bank houses more than 17,000 works, plus travelling exhibitions and a cinema. The Queensland Art Gallery opened at South Bank in 1982 and was joined by the Gallery of Modern Art in 2006 — the two buildings now sit around 150 metres apart on the banks of the Maiwar River, together holding thousands of works from Australia and around the world.
Its flagship program, the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, has run since 1993 and become one of the most significant recurring surveys of contemporary art from the region, drawing more than three million visitors across its history.
Beyond the main galleries, QAGOMA runs the Australian Cinémathèque — where a 1929 Wurlitzer pipe organ still accompanies silent film screenings — a dedicated Children's Art Centre, and riverside cafes and a restaurant that make the most of Brisbane's subtropical climate. Entry to the galleries and most exhibitions is free.
