Daily Detours for the Week of October 16

In partnership with

Featuring Chicago-style deep dish pizzas and sick synth by Donny Benét.

When your nine-to-five plays out like a well-oiled machine, it can sometimes feel like each week is a little same-same. But Sydney is brimming with a fine bounty of things to experience and explore each and every day. So aside from casual laziness and a little lack of inspiration, there's really nothing stopping you from squeezing some adventure and spontaneity into your schedule.

We've teamed up with Mazda3 to help you celebrate the little things that bring a sense of adventure to life. Shake things up, as we give you seven different detours to take each week in Sydney. From Monday to Sunday, enrich your everyday with one completely achievable activity that inspires you to take the scenic route as you go about your daily routine.

This week, book in an after-work bowls session, duck into the last late night with the Archibald and go on a second-hand bargain treasure hunt across the city. Plus, we've got your future detours sorted for the next few weeks here.

All require no more effort than a tiny break from the norm — what's your excuse for not trying them all?

    Not Another Manic Monday

If you haven’t experienced a sweat-inducing, VHS-style aerobics class made popular by the likes of Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons, we recommend you change that ASAP. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Whip out the hot pink and turquoise lycra, tease up your hair and get ready for fitness queen Shannon Dooley’s Retrosweat, Palm Springs edition. Dubbed ‘Not Another Manic Monday’, these classes will get your heart pumping as you high-kick your way into a new week with beats and moves from one of the most outlandish decades — when bum bags, acid wash and power suits were king.

After-Work Bowls and Trivia at PBC

Spending quality time outdoors and with your pals after work is a solid way to improve your mental health. But achieving this and getting into bed at a reasonable hour can feel like an impossible task. We’ve found a solution. Head over to Petersham Bowling Club for a couple of rounds of after-work bowls followed by a couple of rounds of trivia. Make a night of it by hitting up the bistro, which serves some tasty bites (including a number of vegetarian options). You can be further satisfied by knowing that all seasonal produce is sourced from local sustainable vendors.

Art After Hours — The Archibald Prize

This Wednesday is your last chance to catch the Archibald Prize after work before it closes for another year. Keeping AGNSW open until 10pm, Art After Hours lets you explore the prize one last time, all while bringing you live music, talks, demonstrations and gallery tours to go with. If you haven’t had a chance to see this year’s Archibald or if you want to see if one last time, brush up on this year’s talking points, get to know the muses behind the finalist portraits and join one of those free tours through the exhibition — though, after all that prep, you may be able to hold some tours yourself.

    Deep-Dish Pizzas and Donny Benet

We have American TV to thank for our in-depth familiarity with deep dish pizzas. But with so many incredible local pizza dispensaries, the deep dish trend still hasn’t properly blown up in Sydney. Johnny Fontane’s in Darlinghurst is trying to change that. The Chicago-style eatery, which is described as a ‘hotspot for gangsters and glitterati alike’, serves up some serious deep-dish action. Get your pizza fix, then head up to Oxford Art Factory to catch a gig by local celebrity Donny Benét, the Sydney solo artist with a unique sound characterised by sick synths and post-disco melodies. Prep yourself for his smooth sounds with a listen to his hit single, Konichiwa.

    $7.50 Movie Sessions

Remember those good ol’ days when you could buy a ticket to the movies and get change from a $10 note? It feels like something that died with the Y2K bug. But you’d be wrong. If you’re someone who isn’t so keen on spending a whole week’s wages on a movie ticket and a small popcorn, you’re in luck. At Campbelltown’s Dumaresq Cinemas, you can buy tickets to all the latest films for $7.50, which means enough change to splash out on a fancy choc top. The old-school budget cinema prides itself on being a theatre you can take the whole family to without having to remortgage your house (if you even have one of those). To clarify, the anachronistic rate of $7.50 per ticket is available all day, every day.

    Brunch on a Ferry Wharf

There’s something about crossing the Sydney Harbour by ferry that always feels a bit like a mini-holiday, especially on a Sunday. And even more so when your destination is the glorious Celsius Coffee Co. Perched above the water at Kirribilli Wharf, this has to be one of the more unique brunch spots. If you’re lucky enough to nab a window seat, you’ll feel like you’re practically floating on the harbour. The local produce-driven menu features seven kinds of breakfast eggs (served all day), and delicious coffee from ONA. From the ferry ride over to the gorgeous food and stunning views from your table, you’ll wonder why you haven’t done this more often.
