Alba Thermal Springs is an architectural standout on the Mornington Peninsula hot spring circuit, with its curved concrete walls and striking geometry tucked into a coastal landscape, This October, Melbourne International Jazz Festival is soundtracking the tranquil site for three days, where live contemporary jazz from Australian jazz artists will accompany soaks in the mineral waters of 32 geothermal pools. "We've been seeking the perfect partner to create a premium live music experience that brings together the restorative nature of Alba with the creativity and artistry of Australia's vibrant jazz scene," Kadi Morrison, Alba's marketing director, says. On Thursday, October 22, Holly Moore will lead her trio through two evening sets. The saxophonist's masterful compositions in her 2024 contemporary jazz album FLOOD received praise for its distinctive voice, majestic melodies and emotional depth – and her playing doesn't go unnoticed either. She plays alongside acclaimed guitarist Matt Hoyne and Robbie Finch on double bass. On Friday, October 23, the up-and-comers take over. Dean Kalait, a saxophonist known for his raw, narrative-driven expression, leads the trio. On the cusp of releasing a second album inspired by Australian jazz great Andrea Keller and late American legend Wayne Shorter's quartet, his experimental sensibilities are met by fellow rising talents in the Australian jazz scene, double bassist Lily Appelt and drummer Quinn Knight (who have previously played together at venues like The Vic Bar and Waxflower). The festival winds down with a little afternoon swing on Sunday, October 25. Contemporary vocalist Clancya Milne and German-born guitarist Benjamin Attiche, who have been performing as a jazz duo for eight years, will bring heartfelt originals and crowd-pleasing jazz standards to Alba. Bathers can enjoy the Melbourne International Jazz Festival program from Alba's pools or the courtyard of Karen Martini-run restaurant Thyme, where canapés will be served. There's also the option of reserving a picnic rug to set down in the property's native gardens, alongside some artisan cheese and a glass of Mornington Peninsula pinot. Bookings for Alba Thermal Springs event are open online. The Melbourne International Jazz Festival runs from Friday, 16 October–Sunday, 25 October at various venues across Victoria – visit the festival website for the full lineup. Like what you see?
