As Bifanas of Afonso
It may be a hole-in-the-wall eatery, but the flavours of its namesake pork sandwich are huge.
Overview
This is one of the top spots in Lisbon for a bifana, the classic fast food beloved by locals. We're talking a pork sandwich. But not just any sandwich. Thinly sliced pork steaks cooked in white wine, lard and spices are pulled from the seething pot of rich liquid before your very eyes, and slapped into a crusty white roll for the meat juices to soak right in. Sauce it your way – mustard is always a favourite. Unpretentious, cheap, fast and undeniably delicious, it's best served with cold beer at their little bar. There are other menu items, mostly fried, meaty or otherwise, delightfully simple snacky pleasures like crackling, as well as a soup of the day and a few desserts for those with a sweet-tooth hankering after their pork roll.
