Manteigaria
This butter shop turned pastry factory is home to some of the tastiest pastéis de nata you'll ever try.
Overview
This spot claims to make the best pastéis de nata in Lisbon and the surrounds – maybe that's why they've got lines out the door. From their vintage Art Nouveau wooden frontage on Camões Square, warm light spills out with the scent of baked custard and caramelised pastry, tantalising before you even step inside.
Manteigaria still uses the same traditional artisan production, with a simple custard of whole eggs, sugar and butter, baked with those telltale burnt patches. That's how you know you've got a proper Portuguese tart. Note the powdered cinnamon and confectioner's sugar on your tastebuds, then bite through the crackle of flaky pastry and toothsome top to the gooey yellow-gold centre within. Stand and enjoy your tart with a coffee (or a shot of local ginja). You can also visit their newer outlet in the Mercado da Ribeira, where there's more sitting room but the same quality of perfect pastéis de nata.
