Sydney's live music scene has taken another hefty blow, with reports iconic venue The Basement is shutting up shop in its current Circular Quay digs.

With 45 years under its belt, the venue is one of Sydney's oldest live jazz spots and the city's oldest licensed music venue. Its diverse music program has cemented its status as a true legend over the decades. Local musician Danny G Felix took to social media on Sunday, March 25, to announce the closure. Felix stated, "So... it's true The Basement is closing down in less than a week."

Rumours are rife regarding the fate of the famed, 550-person nightspot, though its operators are yet to comment. AMP Capital, which owns The Basement's current building, has squashed fears about the space's future, with a spokeswoman saying, "while it's too soon to say whether another music operator, bar or restaurant will move in, there is absolutely no intention to convert The Basement into office space."

The Basement has yet to make an official statement or comment via social media, however, earlier this morning it took to Facebook to confirm a gig for this Friday.

We'll keep you updated as the story develops.

UPDATE APRIL 5, 2018:

The Basement has taken to social media to thank its supporters and to set the record straight regarding the closure. In a Facebook post on April 3, the venue's management explained the current site was simply no longer suiting their needs and that they've been exploring alternate venue options.

They've also clarified they've been working closely with their property manager AMP Capital during the transition period, and have the group's full support as they end the current lease and seek out a new, permanent home.
