Sydney's First Ever Hangover Clinic Is Open
Just in time for your work Christmas party.
Christmas, as inevitable as death and taxes, is upon us again and for many, this time of year means arduous shopping challenges followed by drunken Christmas parties that are only bearable if your blood alcohol limit clocks in at a merry 0.15. 'Tis the season to be jolly and deck the halls with buckets of hangover vomit. But fear not, ye merry gentlefolk of Sydney, because the Hangover Clinic has opened for those times when you’ve really, really over done it.
The clinic allows you to hook up to an IV cocktail of hydration fluid, vitamins B and C, anti-headache and nausea medication, oxygen treatment and antioxidant boost. Treatments can take anywhere between half an hour to an hour and are administered by trained and registered medical professionals (who probably didn’t envisage this for their career while slogging through medical school).
The downside? That means the cost is pretty ridiculous — between $140 and $200 for a treatment. You’d want to be reeeeeeeally sick — and rich enough that knowing your actions have no consequences doesn’t bother you — to make it rain for this. Although it does mean you can schedule your bucks party for the night before the wedding, safe in the knowledge that you can buy your good health back the next day and ensure no whacky antics go down at the ceremony.
The clinic has been accused of encouraging binge drinking, something for which Aussie’s need little encouragement, but co-founder Max Petro said denies it, telling The Sydney Morning Herald, “We don't serve alcohol. We are not a pub. We encourage binge drinking as much as hospitals encourage people to get sick." Touche.
There are a few less, ahem, self-indulgent applications for the treatment, including reversing the dehydration effects of jetlag, cold and flu and sports recovery so it's not all bad.
