Focus on Miranda July
As part of RISING 2025, ACMI is celebrating one of cinema's most-distinctive talents, including sessions of 'The Future' and 'Kajillionaire'.
Overview
Whether she's behind the camera or in front of it — or both — a movie that involves Miranda July in some shape or form is instantly worth everyone's attention. The same applies to the American talent's recordings, art and books, too, because displaying at the Venice Biennale and hitting the New York Times bestsellers list are also on her resume.
July's filmography is small but impactful. She's packed a punch by opting for quality over quantity so far, and viewers have been able to reap the rewards. Case in point: the phenomenal Kajillionaire, which hit screens nine years after her previous film before that; instantly proved distinctive, empathetic and engaging; and was also one of the absolute best movies of 2020.
Accordingly, it's no wonder that Melbourne's Australian Centre for the Moving Image is spending more than a week between Thursday, June 5–Monday, June 16 paying tribute to July as part of RISING 2025. Kajillionare is screening, and so are the July-directed Me and You and Everyone We Know and The Future. You can also see her on-screen in the exceptional Madeline's Madeline and hear her give voice to volcanologist documentary Fire of Love.
A compilation of July's early shorts, including a music video for Sleater Kinney, is on the lineup as well — as is a session of factual works that explore how she goes about making art.
