Overview
Aboriginal theatre company Black Arm Band, in collaboration with various prominent Australian artists including members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, will explore notions of contemporary Indigenous identity in their latest production, ngangwurra means heart.
The show, which takes its name from the Yorta Yorta word for ‘heart’, will combine music, performance and visual art in order to tell the story of seven key points in Aboriginal history, from the time before European settlement all the way up until today. According to Artistic Director Lou Bennett, the show aims to present these moments “from an internal empathetic point of view rather than a dry history lesson.”
Ngangwurra means heart is the most recent work from Black Arm Band, whose previous shows include the critically-acclaimed Hidden Republic and dirtsong, among others.
