John Cena has many talents. He's a pro wrestler, an actor, a rapper, an author and, apparently, a massive coffee snob. While the modern-day Renaissance man has millions of fans around the globe, he might just have won a few more in Melbourne.

Captured in a recent interview with Bon Appétit, the superstar offered a steadfast advocacy for our humble flat white while revealing his personal benchmark for uncovering a coffee-first cafe. That is: whether it knows how to serve a flat white just right.

"The best flat whites I've had are in Australia — Melbourne, Australia. They are a coffee-first people," says Cena. "The reason I love a flat white is because coffee is a universal language throughout the world, so I will judge a place on its flat white."

That sounds like sweet talk to any coffee-drinking Melburnian. While our favourite brew has won hearts and minds around the globe, hunting down a flat white that lives up to our famously snooty standards isn't so easy when travelling far and wide.

"Some people misinterpret a flat white, but that's how I can be like 'this isn't a real coffee shop, or this isn't coffee-first,'" explains Cena. "A lot of places are food-first; coffee is an accoutrement."

As for when Cena became a passionate champion of the flat white, it might have been in 2023, when he was in town filming Ricky Stanicky. He was frequently spotted getting his daily dose at Degraves Espresso — a solid choice for coffee-first people.
