Overview
Tucked into Hawthorn East, Anderson Park started life as the plant nursery for the old Mount Ida Estate before the council acquired the 5.6-hectare site in 1911. More than a century on, its heritage trees have matured into a proper canopy, and the elevated ground gives you a clear sightline over the rooftops to the city skyline beyond.
It's a genuine local secret — most people commuting past on the number 72 tram have no idea it's there. Set up a picnic under the trees, with covered barbecue areas and plenty of seating if you'd rather not sit on the ground, and let the dog off the lead in the designated area while the kids work through the three-level playground nearby.
