Overview
St Kilda Pier has been a fixture of the bay since 1853, and it remains one of the best places in Melbourne to watch the city skyline catch the last light of the day. Walk to the end and you're standing on one of the most photographed stretches of coastline in the city, with unobstructed views back toward the CBD across the water.
The real drawcard happens after the sun starts dropping: a colony of wild fairy penguins nests in the breakwater rocks at the pier's end, and they start swimming home for the night about half an hour after dusk. Locals fish off the sides most evenings, and the newly rebuilt pier and breakwater — part of a $50.3 million project — make for an easy, flat walk out and back.
