From 6pm last night, Sunday, August 2, tough new stage four restrictions came into effect for metropolitan Melbourne and a state of disaster was declared for all of Victoria.

The new rules include a nightly curfew from 8pm to 5am and a ban on exercising or shopping for essentials more than five kilometres from your home, which has sent locals scrambling to find quick ways to map out their own five-kilometre 'green light' zones. With stage four lockdowns now in place for the next six weeks, until at least Sunday, September 13, you're about to get even more familiar with the five-kilometre radius around your home.

There are a few easy ways to check out your household's government-approved travel radius, but none have proved quite as popular as KM From Home — a website that originally launched in Ireland back in March, when that country introduced its own travel restrictions.

Now, us Melburnians have jumped on board, with creator Dave Bolger tweeting that over 225,000 Aussies have checked the site in the past day. The online map is free and easy to use — simply centre it to your address, select a five-kilometre radius and you'll see a big red or blue bubble encompassing the zone you're free to travel in under the Victorian Government's new rules.

You'll find other radius apps out there as well, including the likes of Travel Time, Map Developers and The Age's new tool.

Alternatively, if you've got a Garmin watch, you can download this range warning and it'll alert you when you're closing in on a certain distance from your run's starting point.

Want to check a specific cafe or shopping centre to see if it falls in your five-kilometre zone? There's a function on the Google Maps app that allows you to measure a distance as the crow flies. Simply touch and hold the location on the map until the red pin appears, then scroll down and click 'measure distance' below the venue's details. That'll tell you how exactly how far the address is from your starting point.

Under the new rules, you can only exercise once a day for a maximum of an hour and only one person per household can leave for essential goods, and only once per day. And this must all be done within five kilometres of your home, of course.

The Premier says that more announcements will be made about businesses and workplaces at a press conference this afternoon.

Victoria's State of Disaster began at 6pm, Sunday, August 2, along with Stage Four restrictions for metropolitan Melbourne.
