Overview

A cosy, family-owned gem serving up traditional Italian fare, Bertoni Casalinga is the kind of place you pop into between Woolies and the bookstore to grab a quick coffee and a pastry. They serve a variety of Italian doughnuts, including rather spectacular Nutella ciambelle.

The standouts, however, are the zuccherati ($3). Filled with a fluffy, lemon-scented ricotta, the airy yet satisfying pastry is the perfect denseness; the sprinkled sugar an ideal response to the tart filling. It's excellent with a frothy cappuccino or, for those who like contrast, a super-strong, body-shudderingly bitter espresso. If you don't appreciate citrus in your desserts, they also come filled with vanilla custard.
