Overview

When you step inside Shirt Bar tucked away on Sussex Lane, the phrase "all shirts and no suits" springs to mind. Unpretentious and a charmingly refreshing spot for a post-work beverage, Shirt Bar is a trifecta of Australian shirts, coffee and international whisky. Definitely worth a visit.

Half shirt shop and half watering-hole specialising in the two aforementioned staples of the modern business person's diet – caffeine and fermented grain mash, also known as whiskey – we were expecting the place to be a little busier come end of week. But with an outdoor area, a generous amount of room inside and quirky fittings left, right and centre, this hybrid spot offers space to spread out with just the right amount of atmospheric buzz. Something that trumps the usual deafening boom of thirsty banker types any day.

We opted for two of the 17 displayed whiskies and were served by Sabina; this lady's one quarter of the visible team and half of the duo behind husband and wife women's shirt label, Louka + Sabina (on sale across the room among other Aussie brands, Ganton, Jensen and Bespoke by Ganton, ranging from $100 to $200). Served the right way with one, large ice cube, a teeny bowl of salted nutty nibbles and a well-rounded blurb of tasting knowledge, the Macallan 12-year-old ($17) was smooth with a sherry finish while the Tasmanian Overeem ($15) was noticeably darker and went down like devilishly alcoholic syrup.

Unique and a nice change to the CBD norm, Shirt Bar is a whisky lover's haven whether you're a connoisseur or a budding wannabe. We'd recommend you try this place on for size, because it's tailored to fit.
