Stickers: Are They Just Stuck-Up Pieces of Crap?

Are stickers just "stuck-up pieces of crap" or a relevant form of contemporary art?

Overview

We love a good, hard-cover, subcultural exploration, and with urban art now getting the art history and appreciation treatment in books like Taschen's Tresspass: A History of Uncommissioned Urban Art, it was only a matter of time before the relevance of stickers in street and contemporary art got the same spotlight.

Stickers: Stuck Up Piece of Crap – From Punk Rock to Contemporary Art by DB Burkeman (DJ DB), Shepard Fairey and Carlo McCormick and published by Rizzoli, explores the vibrant history of stickers in pop culture - from punk, skating, graffiti, music publicity, branding, activism, tagging, and contemporary artworks. Featuring over 4000 images and written contributions from over 30 artists, including Martha Cooper, Stanley Donwood, Shepard Fairey, Carlo McCormick, Clayton Patterson, Stephen Powers (ESPO) and Swoon, the book also comes with a folder of 23 exclusive, die-cut stickers, many signed by the sticker artists, such as Kenny Scharf, Barry McGee, Ryan McGinness, Jose Parla, Mark Dean Veca, Rostarr, and Space Invader.
