A Soundtrack for Spring: 10 Bands We Think You Should Know (Pt. 1)

Overview

Although it has officially been Spring for less than two weeks, the warmer signs of the season have only peeped at us so far. This week though, as if a treat from Gaia (or the Bureau of Meteorology) the weather is set to be sparkling sunny fresh. To usher in such a change, and encourage its continuation, we at Concrete Playground have prepared a Soundtrack for Spring featuring songs from ten local-ish artists you're likely to hear a lot more from over the warmer months.

We'll be revealing these in two batches (with no particular hierarchy)--the first today and the final five next Friday.

1. Kite Club (Melbourne)

Kite Club is once-was-Sydneysider, Nathan D. Futcher. His jaunty, psychedelic tunes tip the hat to acts like Wild Beasts or Antony Hegarty. 'Going Swimming' might not really be about going swimming, but it does have a piano-stomping beat and a brain-stutter-inducing verse hook that will make you want to skip all the way to your nearest body of water, preferably with a longneck in hand.

Kite Club plays Mum @ World Bar on October 22.

2. Fishing (Sydney)

A largely elusive beat-making duo from Sydney, Fishing have already been given props by Pitchfork's Forkast. No small feat. It makes sense, of course, when you listen to the delicious glitch collage that is 'OOOO'.

Fishing are opening for DZ this Saturday night at Spectrum.

3. Jinja Safari (Sydney)

Okay, chances are you may have heard of these guys. They're all over Triple J right now, and this song was actually released earlier in the year. That said, we have our money on Jinja Safari being to Summer 2010, what Jonathan Boulet was to Summer 2009.

Jinja Safari will play the GoodGod Small Club on September 23.

4. POND (Perth)

POND used to share a record label (Hole In The Sky) with Tame Impala, and they still have three common members. Like their once-were-labelmates, POND flirt heavily with 60s and 70s nostalgia, but their tunes are snappier: less hypnotic and more heady.

POND's third release Frond is out now.

5. Strange Talk (Melbourne)

Strange Talk have only been around for about six months, but they're already drowning in buzz around the web (including a mention on Flavorwire). Climbing Walls is infectious as hell, in a 'make you wanna dance all the way to work' kind of way.

Strange Talk will open for Jinja Safari at GoodGod Small Club on September 23.
