Losing mobile reception is usually part of heading off the beaten track. Whether camping or road-tripping, there comes a point where the bars on your phone disappear, as does access to maps, messages and weather updates. Telstra is turning that familiar experience into an interactive event with the launch of Australia's first Bar with No Bars: a one-day-only pop-up in regional New South Wales where there'll be no traditional mobile coverage, but guests can still stay connected using satellite technology. On Saturday, July 11, the off-grid bar will pop up in Capertee Valley, giving visitors the chance to experience Telstra's new satellite connectivity in a real-world setting. Guests can expect food and drinks from boutique Australian producers while putting satellite connectivity to the test in one of the country's most scenic off-grid locations. Rather than ordering at the counter, guests will send their drink order via WhatsApp using satellite connectivity. They'll also be able to message friends and family, check the weather, look up directions, stay across the footy scores and access a selection of everyday apps — all despite being beyond Telstra's mobile network. The event celebrates an Australian first, as part of Telstra's collaboration with Starlink's direct-to-cell satellite network. Eligible customers can now use a selection of practical, satellite-optimised apps on compatible mobile devices. There's no need for specialist equipment either. Compatible devices automatically connect to satellite when they're out of mobile range, provided they have the latest software installed and a clear line of sight to the sky. The technology is designed as a practical backup when travelling beyond mobile coverage, making it possible to send messages, check directions or view weather information in places where those everyday conveniences would usually be unavailable. It's worth noting that Telstra Satellite is not an emergency service. It supports messaging and select apps only, and users cannot text Triple Zero directly. Anyone travelling beyond mobile coverage should still plan ahead, let others know their itinerary, carry appropriate If you'd like to experience Australia's first Bar with No Bars for yourself, the pop-up will be open from 12–2pm on Saturday, July 11, with attendance via registration.
