Following a transformation of its ground-level space into a fancy French bistro, The Strand Hotel has also unveiled a breezy rooftop bar surrounded by Sydney highrises.

Located on William Street among heritage-listed and brutalist gems of Darlinghurst and Wolloomolloo, The Strand's rooftop bar consists of a sun-soaked courtyard boasting vibrant colours and a summer-ready drinks list. The house speciality? The Strand Margarita ($22) made with 1800 Coconut and Del Maguey Vida.

"We've designed the rooftop to provide an unexpected and charming escape amongst the anonymity of William Street, with a deliberate strong contrast to the aesthetic experienced through the brooding texture and materials of the hotel rooms and Bistro below," says Public Hospitality and Public Design Studio's Tom de Plater who is overseeing the makeover alongside cult denim brand Ksubi's George Gorrow.

There are also plenty of great bar snacks to enjoy, including the leg ham toasties ($19), prawn cocktails ($15 for two), corn gruyere croquettes ($14 for two) and the French Kiss ($30) which combines Belvedere vodka with Oscietra caviar.

Each weekend, the rooftop hosts DJ sets and live entertainment. Plus, once the in-house DJs wrap up, anyone looking to kick on until the early hours of the morning can then head down to the newly refurbished Club 77, just a few doors down.

The walk-in-only bar is complete with a retractable roof, meaning it can accommodate big doses of Vitamin D when needed or a shady place to escape the sun during summer. Just make sure your footwear is staircase-ready, as the only way to get up to the roof is to ascend the hotel's multiple levels on foot.
