WHERE TO SHOP LIKE A LOCAL IN AND AROUND CASTLE HILL

in partnership with

This region in Sydney's west has everything you need to live well — from locally grown produce to a cosy wine bar for date nights.

Shopping local has become much more than a passing trend — it's a way of life for many Sydneysiders. You may not get overly excited by having a go-to fruit and veg stand, flower shop or — most importantly — wine bar in your neighbourhood, but they're the things that ultimately help you love where you live. And if you live in or near Castle Hill, you already have 'em all.

To help make your next local shopping adventure successful, we've teamed up with American Express to put together this list of Castle Hill favourites. All of these shops are delightful in their own way — and all of them will accept your American Express Card. Whether it's locally sourced produce, top-notch bottles of wine or a bouquet of flowers for your loved one, this list has you covered when you want to shop small.

    Beautiful Blooms

Set on Old Northern Road, this award-winning (and independently owned) shop is a flower lovers dream. The team are incredibly knowledgeable and really embrace the local vibe. They’ll arrange gifts and bouquets for any occasion and can create your floral bunch based on your preferences — from pastel hues to bright pink and purple bunches. If you’re after a last-minute gift, the store also stocks champagne, chocolates, candles and soft toys to pair with your bunch of blooms. This little Castle Hill flower studio is also open six days per week, so it’s ideal for last-minute purchases.

    Northwest Growers

Castle Mall’s Northwest Growers is a local go-to for the freshest fruit and vegetable around town. Owners and brothers Peter and Bud source most of the fruit from their nearby family farm and orchard — including stone fruits like peaches, nectarines, plums and figs. And the veg is also sourced locally in Windsor and Galston. The offering is brought in fresh from the farm each day and is among the best you can get. Alongside the fresh stuff, there are family made jams and other smallgoods up for grabs, too.

For top-notch wines and a gorgeous meal out in Castle Hill, head to The Lane Winebar. This cosy spot received a revamp in early-2019, so a visit will now see you choosing between three different spaces to sit — a fairy light-lit laneway, a hidden cocktail bar and the front library, which has shelves of vintage books and wine bottles lining one wall.

The massive wine bible includes over five pages of wines by-the-glass alone. There are also heaps of aperitifs, digestifs and fortified wines, along with $10 house wines and a list of ten classic cocktails to boot.

Meanwhile, its seasonal menu currently features the likes of Cone Bay wild barramundi with goat’s cheese vinaigrette; spiced duck breast with fennel purée, cumin roasted baby carrots and juniper jus; barbecued sardines with horseradish and chive potato salad; and harissa roasted lamb rump with crispy artichokes. Yes, it’s a special meal out on the town — but in your local ‘hood.

    Piccolo Me West Pennant Hills

Piccolo Me is a dessert-ified coffee house that also happens to be 100-percent Australian owned. Its fair trade beans are sourced locally and organically, and while you can certainly get your usual coffee order, the reason this joint pulls a crowd is its over-the-top concoctions. On the hot drink side of things, there is both the Nutella bomb hot chocolate and the Nutellagato (that’s an affogato with Nutella ice cream, chocolate flakes and crushed hazelnuts). For something over ice, opt for one of the coffee frappes — choose between mint chocolate, matcha, cookies and cream or taro, then top it with whipped cream and Oreos or Maltesers.

You can also grab breakfast or lunch to go here. The menu features everything from smashed avocado on sourdough to a range of burgers, including a cheeseburger croissant — which is exactly what it sounds like. It’s all very indulgent, but you won’t regret it.
