Three years ago, FBi Radio decided the people who make this city a brighter place to be had gone unrecognised too long, and so the SMAC awards were born. Last night, January 20, the SMACs were awarded for the third time at Darlinghurst's National Art School, dishing out the acclaim to those who keep the city's creative heart beating, and proving once again that the best of Sydney's art, music and culture need not be the biggest nor brightest lights. Big winners were Cloud Control, who took out the awards for both 'Best Live Music Act' and 'Record of the Year', as well as the Laneway Festival, which, unusually for the Sydney-centric SMACs, was born in the streets of Melbourne and travelled north. Laneway Festival deservedly won 'Best Major Festival' of the year, while Newtown's Changing Lanes festival took out 'Best Music Event'. The biggest pat on the back (and delightfully named) 'SMAC Of The Year' was awarded to Hana Shimada and Jimmy Sing of Liverpool Street's small club, GOODGOD, for enhancing Sydney's nightlife. And for a collection of people who've worked their hardest this past year to make Sydney a more awesome place, we here at Concrete Playground offer you our fondest thanks.
