In 2005 students at American university Middlebury put their minds to figuring out a way to play Quidditch, the game played on flying broomsticks made famous in the Harry Potter books, without actually flying. Their solution was to run purposefully around a field in some capes, broomsticks clutched between their legs, hurling balls at mounted hula-hoops. The game caught on, and this November will mark the largest Quidditch World Cup on record, with more than sixty university and high-school teams registered to play in New York. There is even a company, named Alivan's, where you can purchase your broomstick, although they are eager you note their brooms do not technically fly. The newly formed International Quidditch Association are hoping the sport will continue to gain popularity, but still retain its whimsical spirit, which sees wizards and owls lining the sidelines of matches. J.K. Rowling has been invited to this, and previous, World Cups, but has yet to attend. https://youtube.com/watch?v=fr_h5-I_yks
