Tooth and Nail Is Marrickville's New Hairdresser Hangout

"We don't even like the word barbershop, we just want it to be a place."

Overview

Over the Christmas holidays, while we were all stuffing ourselves with various meats and cheeses, the team at Tooth and Nail were busy building an empire. And we mean that literally. The guys behind Marrickville's new hairdresser spent the Christmas holidays lovingly crafting all of the furniture and fittings for their new venue by hand.

It's been on the cards for the trio, Daniel Blakemore, Connor Keighran and Jake de Varine-Bohan, for a while. "We've always wanted to create a space that's comfortable for everybody, all genders... everyone's welcome to just to come in and hang out," Connor shares.

You may recognise them from Sterling, the hairdressing parlour in Surry Hills where Connor and Daniel worked for ten years collectively. And the latter is also a co-owner at Daisy's Milk Bar in Petersham, purveyors of the creamiest shakes you'll ever encounter — but now they're striking out on their own.

Just don't expect a cookie-cutter, hipster barbershop. In fact, don't even mention the word rockabilly. "There's no theme to [Tooth and Nail]," Connor says. "We hate the word rockabilly. We don't even like the word barbershop, we just want it to be a place. We're trained hairdressers so we do women's hair, men's hair, kids hair, long, short — everything."

You may have noticed Tooth and Nail's (refreshing) lack of stereotypical hairdressing branding. It's a conscientious decision by the team to not box themselves in. The long-term plan for the parlour is to build strong ties with the local art and music scene. In fact, they've already got their pals Paste Studio, who did their branding, working upstairs — and Grifter Brewing Company over the road are always down for knock-off beers.

If this sounds like your idea of nirvana, book yourself an appointment and get behind Marrickville's chillest small business.
