Overview
Last year, the Royal Botanic Garden launched a new blood-thirsty exhibition, Plants with Bite. The botanic display saw 25,000 creepy carnivorous plants make their home in the garden's Calyx building. The plants are still there — and after a brief hiatus over winter, the exhibition is open to the public once more.
The living exhibition is made up of Venus flytraps — luckily these ones don't thrive on human blood — lobster pots, flypapers, bladders and more fascinating, bug-munching plants. And, if you're lucky, you might even see them in action. If you're not, you can do so in augmented reality. The RBG also has an app, which lets you 'collect' the plants — a bit like Pokemon GO — and watch them eat flies.
Plants with Bite will be open from 10am–4pm every day until winter hits next year (the only exceptions being Christmas Day and New Year's Eve). Even if you went last year, it's worth revisiting — the exhibition only continues to grow and overflow onto the floor as the hungry plants search for food. It only costs a few dollars, after all — the garden just asks for a donation on entry.
